I have a variety of interests apart from writing, including reading, cooking, traveling, dancing, running, and making up weird songs. I left in 2009 to pursue writing full-time, and now I happily work in my pajamas every day. I simultaneously began working at Penguin Books, in a young adult division called Razorbill, and while there, I started work on Before I Fall. I pursued literature and philosophy at the University of Chicago, and then moved back to New York to attend NYU’s MFA program in creative writing. Later on, I began working on my own stories, and keeping company with a lot of imaginary friends. I started writing as a way of extending my love of reading when I read a book I loved, I would continue to write sequels for it (I was inadvertently a fan fic writer, before “fan fiction” was even a term!). Our house was old and full of art and towers and towers of books, and that’s still the kind of house I like best. My parents are both literature professors, and from a very early age, my sister and I were encouraged to make up stories, draw, paint, dance around in costumes, and essentially spend much of our time living imaginatively. I was born in Queens and raised in Westchester, New York, in a small town very similar to the one depicted in Before I Fall. Hello and thanks for checking out my website! Here’s some information about me: Here’s a link to the announcement with more details! I hope that this makes you as happy as it’s made me! :) Think of how much Julian we’ll get! Think of how much Alex we’ll see! I, personally, will be thrilled to see these characters come to life on the small screen. The wonderful thing about an expansive medium like television is that there is the time and space to explore smaller elements of the story and the world that would have detracted from the momentum of a novel. The talented people writing the DELIRIUM TV show aren’t trying to take anything away from the story, their goal is to add and expand, and give us all more time with the characters that we love. TV, more so than novel writing, is a collaborative art form (although there is plenty of collaboration between me and my editor!). No adaptation, either for film or TV, will or can completely replicate and remain faithful to them–it’s a totally different art form! I like to think of this as a new riff, a new interpretation of the story I’ve written. Never fear! Look, the books will always be the books. I know that some of you are concerned that a TV show will be “untrue” to the books, due to the need to add content in order to flesh out the story to a full season. I am super psyched because that has always been my preference (for those of you that have read some of my interviews, you know that I LOVE anything that can be done while in pajamas, such as writing and watching television!)/ We’ve been assembling all the moving parts to make that happen over the past few months. The deal is that Fox, which initially optioned the books for film, decided that due to the complexity of all the side plots and characters, the Delirium series might be better suited for TV, as we’d have a chance to explore all of those elements. So now I am SO HAPPY to finally tell you all that a pilot for DELIRIUM has been ordered by the Fox Network! That’s right, DELIRIUM might be coming to you soon as a TV SERIES! I know it’s bad to keep secrets, but I wanted to make sure everything was final before I made this announcement. I’ve been keeping a secret from you guys.
